COMMUNITY COLLEGE

TBAK Community College is an alternative system of education which aims to empower individuals through appropriate skills development leading to gainful employment in collaboration with the local industry and the community. In association with Indira Gandhi National Open University, TBAK Community College will help in developing skills for employment .

Self-employability particularly to the marginalized and underprivileged sections of society .It offers Certificate, Diploma, Associated degree programmes to school dropouts, in particular for womenfolk. TBAK Community College will be a source of Economic growth because they provide an educated and skilled workforce that improves the quality of life for the individual students, communities and the nation.

One of the weaknesses of Indian Education System is that it does not gives due importance to vocational education. As a result there is a mismatch between the skilled manpower required and skilled manpower available. In India diversification of subjects are made after Metric or 10+2. This is the fact Industrial Training Institutes are the last selection among the students. They think of these only after they failed to achieve their motivation and inspiration.

To change this situation first we need to change our mindset. In India, people are obsessed with attaining a graduation degree and generally look down upon vocational education. This has resulted in a situation where on the one hand there are scores of unemployed graduates and on the other hand there is a huge shortage of skilled workers such as plumbers, electricians etc. In this modern world one needs have academic qualification as well as vocational qualification. Academic Education along with vocational education is a current educational reform strategy almost all over the world. This way of learning is being praised by the business community and is being articulated by educationists and policy. Integrating academic courses and vocational courses is not possible at school level.

Yet another problem the country facing is school dropouts. A study shows that one out of three high school students fail to graduate. Many students have low self-esteem that they give up midway in their schooling. It's no surprise that without a competent education, many high school dropouts face the problem and pain of poverty. Without academic qualification or its equivalent, many ex-students find themselves chasing jobs rather than holding them. Especially in the current uncertain economic times, a high school dropout can find himself competing for jobs alongside degreed applicants. The growing number of dropouts will make them four times more likely to be unemployed. He/She does not receive recognition or does not command respect in the community. He ends up in low paying jobs also.

So in order to provide an opportunity to the existing students (studying from VIII standard to XII standard) and the drop outs THASSIM BEEVI ABDUL KADER COLLEGE FOR WOMEN KILAKARAI has come with a solution. IGNOU-TBAKC COMMUNITY COLLEGE, RAMANATHAPURAM a unit of this college offers Vocational education aiming at developing skilled manpower through diversified courses to meet the present day requirements in various sectors and to instill self-employment skills in people through a large number of self employment oriented courses makers. Vocational learning programmes help learners achieve both academic and occupational competencies.
