Gandhi National Open University was established by an act of parliament in 1985, is one of the leading universities in the world with knowledge and capabilities in the area of open and Distance learning. It is envisaged to be an instrument for demarcating and augmenting opportunities for higher education widening areas and promoting a flexible cost effective systems for imparting knowledge and skills. IGNOU now has an enrollment of around 1.5 million students for its 141 academic programmes to 41 countries across the world. The university provides access to education at all levels ranging from Awareness programme to Doctoral Degrees. It provides self learning materials strongly supporter by multimedia learning packages and internet based pedagogy. Internationally ODL and technology enabled distance education and gaining acceptance for higher education. The objective of Convergence Scheme is to achieve the projected targets relating to access and equity in higher education. A convergence of the conventional university systems and the open and distance learning [ODL] system through enhanced, optimal utilization of the physical facilities, intellectual and knowledge resources in colleges is an integral part of this scheme.

IGNOU, New Delhi identifies the Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College For Women, Kilakarai to offer the following Programmes under convergence scheme.

The college was founded in 1988 by Alhaj Dr B S Abdur Rahman Sahib, Founder of the Seethakathi Trust, Chennai. Within short span of 20 years, the college has fulfill the norms and guidelines of UGC, AICTE, The State Government of Tamil Nadu and The Alagappa University. The college has been Nationally Accredited with B+ Grade from National Assessment and Accreditation Council, [NAAC], Bangalore. The institution has also been conferred the status of autonomy from the academic year 2005-2006.

The College was started with the sole aim of imparting higher education to all women of this locale with the motto "Enter to Learn and Leave to Serve", which stands for academic excellence, development of skills and character formation so as to produce intellectually trained, morally upright socially committed and spiritually inspired women of India.

Kilakarai, situated 18 km away from Ramanathapuram on the NH 49, Kilakarai is easily accessible by air, rail or road. Madurai Airport is 130 km away from Kilakarai town and can reach T B A K C Camps by rail or road. The nearest railway station is Ramanathapuram. Kilakarai is also easily accessible by road from all directions from Madurai, Karaikudi, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Nagercoil and Rameswaram.

Applications can be had in person on payment of Rs 125/- for Value Added Programmes and dual degree Programmes and Rs. 225/- for PhD and PG Programmes.
